Welcome back to my South Central Texas garden! 🌿 I’m so excited to share our first big project of the season: installing a Wildwood Cedar Privacy Trellis from Vita to support my brand new Climbing Collette Rose and create a warm, cozy corner in the yard.

Let's Start with Location...

I chose this location specifically because it sits directly between our yard and our sweet neighbor’s. We both love roses, and since our yards are separated by see-through black iron fencing, this trellis offers a shared moment of garden beauty that we’ll both enjoy from opposite sides.

More than that, I’m in the process of creating room-like zones in my backyard to make the space feel more intimate and enclosed—almost like outdoor living rooms. Vertical structures like this one give the illusion of walls while still allowing for sunlight, air flow, and garden views. And they’re perfect for softening hard fences with something natural and blooming.

The Collette Rose: My New Garden Star

This beautiful blush pink Collette climbing rose is going to take center stage on the trellis. Her petals are as romantic as they come, and she’s just getting started! I planted her near the base with plenty of space to stretch and climb, and she’s got great sun exposure here.

The Trellis That Made It All Happen

This Wildwood Cedar Privacy Trellis by Vita checks all the boxes: it’s tall, sturdy, beautiful from both sides, and was relatively easy to install (minus a few Texas limetsone boulders—we’ll get to that!).

I love how it helps define the space visually while giving climbing plants something to grab onto and grow.

It immediately made the yard feel cozier, more custom, and way more peaceful.

The Setback: Hill Country Soil

If you garden in South Central Texas, you know the struggle: boulders everywhere. We hit one right where we wanted to place the legs of the trellis, so we had to bring in a jackhammer (thank you, husbae!) to get the posts seated properly.

If you're planning something similar—budget a little extra time and maybe an upper body workout!

Planting the Base for a Full, Lush Look

Around the base, I planted a mix of perennials and vibrant seasonal color. This space will continue to fill in and feel layered with height, texture, and blooms from spring through fall.

We’re also adding in a Greenstalk tower garden and even a fruit tree to really maximize the area.

Wanna, replicate a similar look in your backyard?  I got you!!!

3 Smart Tips for Creating a Cozy, Private Garden Space in Texas:

Go Vertical for Privacy + Beauty
Texas fences are often black iron or chain-link, which means no privacy by default.
Use vertical garden elements like trellises, arches, or espaliered trees to block sight lines while still looking gorgeous.
Share the View, Don’t Block It:
When you’re close to neighbors, plant something both of you will love. Roses, clematis, or flowering vines on an attractive trellis add charm instead of a “wall” feeling.
Define Outdoor Rooms:
Treat your backyard like a home layout: create zones with vertical elements and pathways to feel like you’re stepping into a new “room.” This makes small spaces feel bigger and more inviting.
