Curtains make a huge impact when it comes to improving the appearance of any space and if done correctly, you can achieve the designer curtain look without breaking the bank!

Curtains soften your area, frame your windows, and have the power to totally change the atmosphere of your place. But if youโ€™ve ever been disappointed by high-water panels or curtains that donโ€™t give that high-end feel, youโ€™re not alone!

The good news? Getting that designer curtain look isnโ€™t as hard as it seems. With a few tricks up your sleeve, you can achieve window treatments that look like they came straight out of a luxury showroomโ€”without blowing your budget.

So, without further ado, let’s hop into how to make it happen!

How to Measure Curtains to Avoid High-Water Panels

First things first: measurements are key.

Nothing says “off-the-rack” more than improperly hung or too-short curtains.

Here’s how you can avoid this really common mistake:

  1. Decide on the curtain rod height:
    • Instead of hanging your curtain rod just over the window frame, hang it closer to the ceiling for a more upscale appearance. To give the impression that the room is taller, aim for 6 to 12 inches above the window trim. This is what really makes your curtains stand out and get that “Designer look”
  2. Determine the length of the panel:
    • Use a tape measure to determine the distance from the rod to the floor. If your ceilings are tall like mine, you’ll likely need some help. I give some advice on how to get that done in the video above.
    • Choose whether you want your curtains to float just above the floor, puddle a little, or “kiss” the floor. I like mine to float just above, I’m talking like 1/8 of an inch; this way, it looks like they are kissing the floor, but I’m not catching all the dust and dog hair that makes its way to my floorboards. I want curtains, not hanging swiffers, if you know what I mean, lol.
  3. Add extra length when needed:
    • If youโ€™re purchasing pre-made panels, err on the side of longer rather than shorter. You can always hem them to the perfect length.

Choosing the Perfect Header for Your Style

The header (or top detail) of your curtains sets the tone for the overall look. The right header style can make or break the vibe youโ€™re going for, so consider these options:

  • Pinch Pleat: Classic and polished, this header works well in formal spaces or traditional designs.
  • Grommet Top: clean lines, but give a casual yet tailored look.
  • Rod Pocket: This alternative conceals the rod for a smooth and soft finish, which is perfect for romantic or shabby-chic settings.
  • Tab Top: Easy to install and casual, tab tops are perfect for bohemian or laid-back styles.
  • Ripple Fold: This minimalist design, which is frequently found in upscale hotels, offers crisp lines and modern elegance.

Before deciding, think about your roomโ€™s overall aesthetic. Want something formal? Go for pinch pleats. More casual? Grommets or tab tops are your best friends.

How to Get Custom-Looking Curtains Without Breaking the Bank

Custom curtains might be the dream, but you can still achieve a luxe look with these budget-friendly tips:

  1. Invest in double-width panels:
    • Wider panels create a fuller, more luxurious look. Avoid panels that look skimpy when pulled closed.
  2. Layer your window treatments:
    • Pair sheer panels with heavier drapes for a more layered and sophisticated look.
  3. Use curtain rings:
    • Even if your panels have a rod pocket, adding rings gives a custom, professional finish.
  4. Iron or steam your curtains:
    • Wrinkles ruin the look. Before hanging, spend some time pressing or steaming your panels. Wrinkled panels give “I just these out the packet” vs. “I custom ordered my panels,” and we want the latter.
  5. Invest in new hardware:
    • Choose finials and rods that have a high-end appearance. Finishes like brushed nickel, brass, or matte black can seem more costly.

Creating a designer curtain look is all about focusing on the little things that have the ability to make a huge impact.

Start by taking accurate measurements so your panels hang perfectly. Then, choose a header style that complements the personality of your roomโ€”whether itโ€™s relaxed and casual or sleek and elegant. Finally, elevate the overall look with thoughtful touches like layering panels, upgrading your hardware, and making sure your curtains are crisp and wrinkle-free.

With these steps, even affordable curtains can look like they were custom-made for your space. So go ahead, take your windows to the next level, and enjoy the polished, high-end vibe they bring to your home!

If you’re looking for an amazing place to shop for designer curtains that are high quality and quite affordable, check out my friends over at thehues.com.

I’ve been shopping with them for as long as I’ve been in my home, and the quality is hands down as close to custom as you can get.

I’ll be doing some work with them in the new year, but I think it’s worth heading over and seeing what they have that you might link.

I’ll be talking more about curtains in posts to come, but if you’re in the market now, it’s def worth taking a look.
